The City and Guilds functional skills exam board is one of the largest as they offer maths, IT and English functional skills exams. The level 2 qualifications tend to be the ones that are taken most often as they are equivalent to GCSEs. GCSEs or equivalents in maths and English are required to gain access to further education courses and to improve employment chances. City and guilds is one of the 10 major exam boards that provide Ofqual regulated exams which means they are UK government approved and universally accepted. This doesn’t however mean that every course provider will accept them, for instance teacher training course providers tend not to accept functional skills and instead opt for equivalency tests.
The City & Guilds functional skills exams can be taken either as a paper format test at a local testing centre or you can book them online through the MME functional skills service. Before taking an exam you should look to prepare using practice papers and course materials to ensure you are prepared. For those who find self study difficult there is always an option of a tutor. We have specialist City and Guilds functional skills tutors who can help you prepare for your exam by plugging any gaps in knowledge, helping you to understand the topics and apply your knowledge to exam style questions. Often learners understand the maths and English within the revision materials but it is the application of knowledge to exam style questions which is what they struggle with. The functional skills tutors can help you to overcome these challenges.
