Understanding Nets
A net shows each face of a shape laid out flat. 3D shapes often have several different nets. Below are some examples of nets of a cube (there are many more):

Nets of Other Shapes
There are some other common nets of 3D shapes that you should be familiar with.
A prism is a shape with two identical 2D shapes that are joined by rectangular faces. The net of a prism will feature the 2D shape at both ends with rectangles between them. A cuboid is also a type of prism, so the net of a cuboid follows the same pattern.
A pyramid will feature a 2D shape as its base, e.g. a triangle or a square, with each edge linked to a triangular face. These triangular faces all meet at a central point above the centre of the base. The net of a pyramid consists of the base, with triangles connected to each edge of the base.
AÂ cylinder is similar to a prism, in that it has two identical faces at each end. The curved section that connects the two circles forms a rectangle when it is stretched out.
Some examples of nets of these 3D shapes are shown below:
Example: Drawing Nets of Cuboids
Draw a net for the cuboid shown.

The cuboid will be made from 6 rectangles.
The front and back faces are 8 cm by 3 cm.
The top and bottom faces are 8 cm by 5 cm.
The side faces are 5 cm by 3 cm.
So, we can draw the net of the cuboid by connecting the rectangles together and labelling the dimensions:
Example: Drawing Nets of Prisms
Draw a net of the triangular prism shown.

Draw the rectangles first, connected to each other. Two of the rectangles are 10 cm by 6 cm and the other rectangle is 10 cm by 4 cm.
Then, connect the two triangles, with the base of the triangle of length 4 cm, to the edges of the rectangle of width 4 cm.
The net should look like this:

Example: Drawing Nets of Pyramids
Draw a net for the square-based pyramid shown.
[2 marks]
We need to draw the square base first. All of its edges are 10 cm.
Now, we need to connect the base of the triangle to each side of the square. The other two sides of the triangle are 9 cm, since it is an isosceles triangle.
The diagram will look like this:
Example: Drawing Nets of Cylinders
Draw a net of the cylinder shown. Take \pi = 3.14

The curved face of the cylinder flattens out to a rectangle.
The rectangle has a height the same of the rectangle, and its width is equal to the circumference of the circle.
diameter =4 \times 2 = 8 cm
circumference = \pi \times d = 3.14 \times 8 = 25.12 cm
Then, draw the rectangle with the circular faces connected to the rectangle anywhere along the circumference, with one on each side.

A and C will form a cube.
The faces on B will overlap when folded over and D has too many faces.
So, A and C are the only nets that can form a cube.

Question 3: What 3D shape will the net below form?

The net will form a prism, with pentagonal faces at each end.
