• Quarter of an hour is 15 minutes
• Half of an hour is 30 minutes
• Three quarters of an hour is 45 minutes.
• To multiply by 60, multiply by 6 and put a 0 on the end.

A car drives for 3 and three quarters hours, how long is this in minutes?”

We will do this in three steps:

Step 1: Convert the full hours into minutes

3 hours = $3\times60$ minutes = 180minutes

Tip: Multiply by 6 and put a 0 on the end.

$$3\times6 = 18$$

3 hours = 180 minutes

Step 2: Convert the extra bit to minutes

Three quarters of an hour = 45 minutes

Step 3: Add the minutes from Step 1 and Step 2 together

180 minutes + 45 minutes = 225 minutes
