• Picture the number on a number line in between the two possible numbers you could round to
• Look at the next digit to the right and decide whether to round up or down.

Let’s remind ourselves how to round smaller numbers first.

Round 5477 to the nearest thousand.

Step 1: Find the place value we are rounding to.

We are rounding to the nearest thousand, so that is the 5.
