## What you need to know

Things to remember:

• There are different names for the same symbol, so you need to learn them.

Equations won’t always be written in maths, but might be give in words, so you need to learn the different names for the symbols.

+ OR add OR plus OR sum

– OR take away OR minus OR subtract

= OR is OR the same as OR equals

Use symbols and numbers to write $x$ times three plus five is equal to seventeen.

To write it, we just write is as we read it.

Write $x$

$$x$$

Write $x$ times three

$$x\times3$$

Hint: When we multiply a letter by a number, we just put the number before it.

Write $x$ times three

$$3x$$

Write $x$ times three plus five

$$3x +5$$

Write $x$ times three plus five is equal to seventeen

$$3x +5 = 17$$

And where we have it, $3x +5 = 17$.

Use symbols and numbers to write two $x$ minus four all divided by six is equal eight.

Write two $x$

$$2x$$

Write two $x$ minus 4

$$2x -4$$

Write two $x$ minus 4 all

$$(2x -4)$$

Write two $x$ minus 4 all divided by 6

$$(2x -4)\div6$$

Write two $x$ minus 4 all divided by 6 is equal to 8

$$(2x -4)\div6 =8$$

And where we have it, $(2x -4)\div6=8$.

Write $x$

Write $x$ divided by three minus twelve is equal to one

$$x \div3 -12 = 1$$

And where we have it, $x \div3 -12 = 1$.

Write six$x$

$$6x$$

Write $x$ times eleven

$$6x \times 11$$

Write $x$ times eleven plus thirteen

$$6x \times 11+13$$

Write $x$ times eleven plus thirteen is equal to twenty-five

$$6x \times 11+13=25$$

And where we have it, $6x \times 11+13=25$.
