Write $x$

$$x$$

Write $x$ times three

$$x\times3$$

Hint: When we multiply a letter by a number, we just put the number before it.

Write $x$ times three

$$3x$$

Write $x$ times three plus five

$$3x +5$$

Write $x$ times three plus five is equal to seventeen

$$3x +5 = 17$$

And where we have it, $3x +5 = 17$.

Use symbols and numbers to write two $x$ minus four all divided by six is equal eight.

Write two $x$

$$2x$$

Write two $x$ minus 4

$$2x -4$$

Write two $x$ minus 4 all

$$(2x -4)$$

Write two $x$ minus 4 all divided by 6

$$(2x -4)\div6$$

Write two $x$ minus 4 all divided by 6 is equal to 8

$$(2x -4)\div6 =8$$

And where we have it, $(2x -4)\div6=8$.

## Example Questions

Write $x$

$$x$$

Write $x$ divided by three

$$x \div3$$

Write $x$ divided by three minus twelve

$$x \div3 -12$$

Write $x$ divided by three minus twelve is equal to one

$$x \div3 -12 = 1$$

And where we have it, $x \div3 -12 = 1$.

Write six$x$

$$6x$$

Write $x$ times eleven

$$6x \times 11$$

Write $x$ times eleven plus thirteen

$$6x \times 11+13$$

Write $x$ times eleven plus thirteen is equal to twenty-five
