Part 08 – Expanding the bracket and simplifying I

Example:

Expand and simplify 4(√2+3√3)+√3-2√2

Worked Solution:

Expand the bracket

4(√2+3√3)+√3-2√2=4√2+12√3+√3-2√2

Simplify using the formulae m√a±n√b±o√c ≡m√a±n√b±o√c and m√a±n√a≡(m±n) √a

4√2+12√3+√3-2√2=(4-2)√2+(12+1) √3=2√2+13√3

Your turn:

Expand and simplify 5(2√7-3√3)+16√3-9√7

The solution can be written in the form, √a+ √b, where b > a

Find the value of a and b

Enter your answer here:
a =
b =
