Part 09 – Expanding the bracket and simplifying II

Example:

Expand and simplify 2(2√3+4)+3(√3-3√7)

Worked Solution:

Expand the bracket

2(2√3+4)+3(√3-3√7)=4√3+8+3√3-9√7

Simplify using the formulae m√a±n√b±o√c ≡m√a±n√b±o√c and m√a±n√a≡(m±n) √a

4√3+8+3√3-9√7=(4+3) √3-9√7+8=7√3-9√7+8

Your turn:

Expand and simplify 3(√19-4√2)+3(√5+4√2)

Your answer can be written in the form 3√a+b√19.

Find the value of a and b.

Enter your answer here:
a =
b =
