Question: A circle has a radius of 5m. Calculate the area and circumference of the circle.

Solution: The formula for the area of a circle is \pi r^2. We get

\text{area }=\pi \times 5^2=78.5\text{ m}^2\text{ (1dp)}

The formula for the circumference is \pi d, where d is the diameter. The diameter is twice the radius, so we get

\text{circumference }=\pi \times 10 = 31.4\text{ m (1dp) }
